This may be explained by the fact that the English have long been used to, and still interested in, news of sports and economy, etc. From 1 pm to midnight, more people sit in front of the screen. The early evening hours may be called TV time for the country, because as many as 50% of the English nation (over 4 years of age) fixes their eyeballs on the boob tube. They switch from one show to another, for information or entertainment.
