斯•斯坦狄什的求婚》(The Courtship of Miles Standish, 1858)。
My Lost Youth《
Often I think of the beautiful town
That is seated by the sea;它就座落在大海邊上;
Often in thought go up and down多少次,我神游于故鄉(xiāng)
The pleasant streets of that dear old town,那些可愛(ài)的街衢,
And my youth comes back to me.
And a verse of a Lapland song那首拉普蘭歌曲的詩(shī)句,
Is haunting my memory still:一直在我記憶里回蕩:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,“少年的愿望就是風(fēng)的愿望,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
最后兩行疊句是詩(shī)人把John Scheffer的《拉普蘭的歷史》(The History of Laplan,1674)中的詩(shī)句改編過(guò)來(lái):“A youth’s desire is the desire of the wind,/All his essaies/Are long delaies,/No issue can they find(青年的愿望就是風(fēng)的愿望,他所有的愿望被長(zhǎng)久拖延,總難實(shí)現(xiàn))。”
I can see the shadowy lines of its trees,
And catch, in sudden gleams,
The sheen of the far-surrounding seas,
And islands that were the Hesperides
Of all my boyish dreams.
And the burden of that old song,
It murmurs and whispers still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第七行中“it murmurs and whispers still”是擬人修辭手法,“it”指上一行中的 “the burden of that old song”。
I remember the black wharves and the slips,
我記得烏黑的碼頭和船臺(tái),And the sea-tides tossing free;
海上恣意奔騰的波浪;
And the beauty and mystery of the ships,
And the magic of the sea.
And the voice of that wayward song
Is singing and saying still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第六至七行中“the voice of that wayward song/ Is singing and saying still”
I remember the bulwarks by the shore,
And the fort upon the hill;
記得山頭聳立的碉樓;
The sunrise gun, with its hollow roar,
The drum-beat repeated o#39;er and o#39;er,
And the bugle wild and shrill.
And the music of that old song
Throbs in my memory still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第六至七行中“the music of that old song / Throbs in my memory still”采用了擬人修辭手法。
I remember the sea-fight far away,
How it thundered o’er the tide!
炮聲在滾滾海浪上震蕩;
And the dead captains, as they lay
In their graves, o’erlooking the tranquil bay,
Where they in battle died.
And the sound of that mournful song
Goes through me with a thrill:
A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
I can see the breezy dome of groves,
The shadows of Deering’s Woods;
熟悉的婆娑樹(shù)影;
And the friendships old and the early loves
Come back with a Sabbath sound, as of doves
In quiet neighborhoods.
And the verse of that sweet old song,
It flutters and murmurs still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
“Sabbath”? “And the friendships old and the early loves /Come back…as of doves/ In …” 第六至七行中“the verse of that sweet old song, / It flutters and murmurs still ”采用了擬人修辭手法。
I remember the gleams and glooms that dart
我記得絲絲的亮光和暗影Across the school-boy’s brain;
閃過(guò)我稚嫩的心靈;
The song and the silence in the heart,
That in part are prophecies, and in part
Are longings wild and vain.
And the voice of that fitful song
Sings on, and is never still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第六至七行中“the voice of that fitful song,/Sings on,…”
There are things of which I may not speak;
有一些情景我不能傾訴;
There are dreams that cannot die;
有一些夢(mèng)想永不會(huì)泯滅;
There are thoughts that make the strong heart weak,
And bring a pallor into the cheek,
And a mist before the eye.
And the words of that fatal song
Come over me like a chill:
一個(gè)寒顫襲過(guò)全身:“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
第七行中的“like a chill”是明喻,把“the words of that fatal song(那句不祥的歌詞)”比作“(chill)寒顫”。
Strange to me now are the forms I meet
當(dāng)重返我親愛(ài)的古城,When I visit the dear old town;
眼前的景象已這般陌生;
But the native air is pure and sweet,
And the trees that o’ershadow each well-known street,
As they balance up and down,
Are singing the beautiful song,
Are sighing and whispering still:
正在低聲嘆息和耳語(yǔ):“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
【評(píng)注】第四至七行中“the trees…/Are singing…,/ Are sighing and whispering”是擬人修辭手法。
And Deering’s Woods are fresh and fair,
故鄉(xiāng)的森林清新而秀麗;
And with joy that is almost pain
My heart goes back to wander there,
我的心在那游歷;
And among the dreams of the days that were,
I find my lost youth again.
And the strange and beautiful song,
The groves are repeating it still:
“A boy’s will is the wind’s will,
“少年的愿望就是風(fēng)的愿望,?And the thoughts of youth are long, long thoughts.”
【評(píng)注】第二行中 “…joy that is almost pain”采用了“矛盾修飾法(paradox)”,第六至七行中“the strange and beautiful song,/The groves are repeating it still ”采用了擬人修辭手法。
